Job Offer Negotiation Script
Every offer is an opening bid. Negotiating doesnβt risk the offer β not negotiating leaves money on the table that the company budgeted for anyway. This recipe gives you the exact script for the response and the counter-moves if they push back.
The Recipe
Act as an expert executive talent agent and compensation negotiator. I have just received a job offer for the role of [INSERT ROLE] at [INSERT COMPANY TYPE/INDUSTRY], but the initial base salary or total compensation package is below my market value and target.
The initial offer details: [INSERT BASE, EQUITY, BONUS, SIGN-ON, ETC.]
My target compensation and unique leverage points: [INSERT TARGET & EXPERIENCE HIGHLIGHTS]
Please provide a comprehensive negotiation script and playbook containing:
- The Verbal/Written Response: A polished, highly collaborative email or phone script to acknowledge the offer with genuine enthusiasm while clearly stating that the compensation needs adjustment to align with the market and the unique value I bring.
- Total Rewards Levers: Give me a prioritized checklist of secondary variables to negotiate if their base salary budget is strictly capped (e.g., signing bonus, guaranteed performance review windows, remote flexibility stipend, additional equity vests).
- Objection Deflectors: Provide word-for-word scripts to handle common HR deflections like "This is the maximum band for this tier" or "We need to keep internal equity across the team."
Secondary levers when base is capped (ranked by value)
| Lever | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Signing bonus | One-time cost β easier to approve than a permanent base increase |
| Accelerated performance review | 6-month instead of 12-month β earlier chance at raise |
| Equity acceleration or additional grants | Doesnβt show up in headcount budget |
| Remote flexibility stipend | Often has its own budget pool |
| Title adjustment | Costs nothing; improves future comp negotiations |
The two deflectors youβll actually need
βThis is the max for the bandβ β βI understand β is there flexibility on a signing bonus or an early performance review to help close the gap? Iβm very excited about this role and want to find a way to make it work.β
βWe need to keep internal equityβ β βI completely understand the importance of internal equity. Based on my [X years of experience / specific skill / past results], Iβd be contributing at a level that I believe warrants [target]. What would it take to get there?β
