Phase 1: Cognitive Runway & Friction Elimination (Pre-Session)

Run 10 minutes before any high-cognitive-load task — clears working memory, converts a vague task into a binary Definition of Done, sweeps your environment against your specific distraction vulnerability, and scaffolds 3 micro-milestones to build momentum in the first 15 minutes.

Role: The Cognitive Performance Coach. Objective: eliminate the friction between sitting down and actually starting — so the first minute of your session is execution, not orientation.

The Recipe

Act as a cognitive performance coach and behavioral psychologist specializing in flow-state optimization. I am about to enter a high-leverage Deep Work session and need to eliminate cognitive friction, clear my working memory, and map an ironclad execution path.

Why “Definition of Done” is the most important output

“Work on the script” can never be finished, so your brain never fully commits to it. “By the end of this session, the authentication module compiles without errors and passes the two existing test cases” is completable — which means you can actually enter a flow state around it. Vague tasks generate vague attention.

The focus vulnerability input

This is the input that makes the Environmental Sanity Check non-generic. “Mental fatigue” produces different environmental guidance than “checking email tabs” or “phone notifications” or “an unresolved conversation I’m replaying.” Name the actual vulnerability you’re walking in with.

The 15-minute momentum window

The first 15 minutes of a deep work session are the highest-friction period — your brain is still resisting the switch from ambient to focused mode. Micro-milestones that are deliberately easy (“open the file and read the last 10 lines,” “write one sentence”) build the forward momentum that carries you into the harder middle section without requiring a separate act of will.

The Socratic method applied to systems design

The one-question cadence is drawn directly from Socratic dialogue: each answer reveals an assumption worth interrogating. “What’s your data model?” → you answer → “How does that handle a null foreign key on ingestion?” → you answer → “What happens to the downstream consumer when the ingestion backpressure exceeds buffer capacity?” The questions drill progressively deeper into the architecture.

When to use this phase

Deploy this at the start of a session when you have a complex design problem to map before writing code, prose, or plans. It’s especially valuable for:

  • System or data architecture decisions with non-obvious trade-offs
  • Technical writing where the structure needs to be worked out before prose
  • Any problem where you’ve been circling the same solution space and need external pressure to break the loop

The “intellectual crucible” input

Be specific. “Design a real-time ingestion pipeline” gives the sandbox less to work with than “Design an event ingestion pipeline on GCP Pub/Sub that needs to handle exactly-once semantics at 50k events/sec with a 200ms latency SLA.” Specificity generates diagnostic questions with teeth.

Recovery beginner

Phase 3: Mid-Session Pacing & Cognitive Unblocking (The Wall)

Deploy when you hit a wall mid-session — an Ugly Blueprint directive to bypass your perfectionist editor, a 2-minute tactical pivot to a momentum-restoring sub-task, and a 60-second somatic grounding exercise to lower cortisol and restore working memory.

The Ugly Blueprint — the most important tool

Most blocks aren’t intellectual — they’re editorial. The part of your brain that wants the output to be good is preventing the part that generates output from working. The Ugly Blueprint directive gives you a specifically low-stakes prompt: “Don’t write the function — just tell me in plain sentences what it should do and why.” The ugly version almost always contains the seed of the working version.

The 2-minute pivot — not a break

This is not a break from the session. It’s a lateral move within it — a secondary sub-task that’s related to your deliverable but easier than the thing you’re stuck on. “I can’t figure out this function, but I can write the docstring for it” or “I can’t write the transition paragraph, but I can sketch the next section’s outline.” Completion of a small adjacent task releases enough forward momentum to return to the hard problem.

The somatic grounding rationale

Cognitive walls generate physiological activation — cortisol rises, breathing shallows, working memory capacity contracts. A 60-second grounding exercise (typically box breathing or a brief sensory grounding exercise) isn’t a productivity hack — it’s a physiological reset. Lower cortisol directly expands working memory, which is why you often find the solution immediately after a short break you resisted taking.

When to trigger Phase 3

  • You’ve been staring at the same problem for 10+ minutes without movement
  • You’ve switched tabs or your phone twice without noticing
  • Your internal monologue has shifted from “how do I solve this” to “this is hard and I can’t”
  • You’re editing the same sentence or function for the fifth time

Run in the final 5 minutes of your block — converts raw notes and unfinished thoughts into a markdown Session Hand-off Log: what you built, open threads still floating in your head, and a single launchpad instruction to re-enter flow state instantly next session.

Role: The Knowledge Management Architect. Objective: offload your working memory before the context fades, so your next session starts at depth instead of spending 20 minutes reconstructing where you were.

Why the shutdown protocol is the most skipped and most important phase

Most people end a session by closing their laptop and moving on. The cognitive context — the partial solution they were mid-way through, the three connected threads they were holding in working memory — evaporates within 30 minutes. The next session starts cold, spending 15–20 minutes reconstructing what was already understood. The Context Anchor eliminates that tax.

The “Next Session Launchpad” — one instruction, not a list

A task list for next session requires processing. A single launchpad instruction re-anchors your exact cognitive position:

“Open auth_pipeline.py at line 47. The handoff validation logic is incomplete — you were deciding between throwing a ValueError or returning a Result type. Resume there.”

That instruction takes 10 seconds to read and immediately reconstructs the problem context. A task list of “continue working on auth_pipeline, also check tests, also update docs” requires you to re-derive priority before you can start.

Integrating with Obsidian or a project tracker

The markdown output is formatted to paste directly into an Obsidian daily note or project file. The three-section structure maps cleanly to:

  • Ground Covered → the “completed” section of your project tracker
  • Open Threads → open tasks or inbox items
  • Launchpad → the top item in tomorrow’s note

Running Phase 1 with the Launchpad as input closes the loop: the shutdown output from one session becomes the pre-session input for the next.
